Gayle Turns Heartbreak Into Healing With “Loving You Is”

Gayle is done accepting less than she deserves. The Grammy-nominated singer released “loving you is,” a stripped-back piano ballad that marks her most vulnerable moment yet, and confirmed her sophomore album, Observing Chaos, arrives September 18.

The track follows last month’s “junebug!” and finds Gayle reckoning with a relationship that taught her the wrong lessons about love. “I wrote ‘loving you is’ about coming to terms with the fact that I didn’t know how I deserved to be treated,” she said. “After taking five million steps back, I realized how frustrated I am for accepting behavior that no one should have to go through, and I’ll never let that happen to me again.”

The song opens with a gut punch: “You made me hate myself, so I could love us.” It’s a far cry from the middle finger she threw in “abcdefu,” but no less powerful. Observing Chaos promises to dig into the mess of falling in and out of love in your early twenties, and if this single is any indication, Gayle is only getting more honest from here.
