Sting is sailing back to the stage. The music icon has announced a limited West End run of his re-imagined musical “The Last Ship,” set to play Theatre Royal Drury Lane from September 22 to October 3, 2026. The run is strictly limited, with Sting himself appearing in every performance.
This version of the show goes deeper than its predecessors. Featuring a new book by playwright Barney Norris and direction by Leo Warner, the 2026 staging has been reworked to include brand new songs alongside material from Sting’s catalog, including “Island of Souls,” “All This Time,” and “When We Dance.” Set and video design is handled by 59, a Journey studio.
Sting stars as Jackie White, a shipyard foreman whose health is failing just as his community faces the closure of the industry that defines them. The story is deeply personal, rooted in Sting’s own upbringing in the British shipbuilding town of Wallsend, and originally inspired by his 1991 album “The Soul Cages.”
“I grew up in the shadow of the shipyard,” Sting said. “I dreamed of escaping, and I did everything in my power to get away from that life. But the farther I got, the more I realized I needed to understand where I came from.”
The production earned Tony nominations for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations following its 2014 Broadway premiere. The London run follows performances in Amsterdam, Brisbane, Paris, and an upcoming stop at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in June.
