Boy George has stepped away from a planned run in the West End’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” following intense backlash to a pro-Israel song he released earlier this week. The Culture Club frontman was set to play King Herod in a rotating cameo at the London Palladium from August 3 through 15, sharing the role with names like Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Richard Armitage, and Simon Russell Beale.
His manager, Paul Kemsley, announced the exit in a statement, saying the decision was made “with the utmost respect for the producers, the creative team and the entire company,” while apologizing to ticket holders who’d hoped to see the singer perform. He added that George “has never been afraid to stand by his personal convictions,” but that stepping aside felt like the right call to keep attention on the production itself and preserve goodwill for everyone involved.
The controversy stems from George’s AI assisted track, released under a Hebrew title translating to “We Will Dance Again,” which pushed back against genocide accusations leveled at Israel over its military actions. George confirmed the song was made using AI, calling it “AI for good” in a since discussed post. He addressed the fallout briefly on X, writing simply, “It doesn’t matter what I think or what you think.”
Richard Armitage is expected to cover George’s dates as the production continues its run through September 5. George himself has yet to directly comment on his departure from the show.
