Jack Harlow shocked fans by dropping a new album called Monica without a rap song in sight. Released on his 28th birthday, the nine-track collection marks the Kentucky rapper’s bold leap into neo-soul and R&B. Known for witty bars on hits like “Whats Poppin,” Harlow trades braggadocious rhymes for smooth vocals and intimate grooves on Monica. The surprise project is also Harlow’s first album in three years, following 2023’s Jackman.
Harlow explained that he was eager to explore a more soulful sound rather than play it safe. “I love R&B music,” he said of the stylistic pivot. “I love the sound of soft, intimate, melodic music… I want to write melodies that invite people to sing along.” The new direction has left some longtime fans divided, but many are praising the rapper’s range. With Monica, Harlow shows a different side of himself — one driven by melody and emotion, a world away from the swaggering rap persona that first put him on the map.
