Taylor Swift continues her record-smashing streak on both stage and screen. The pop superstar’s new album The Life of a Showgirl has sold a staggering 2.7 million copies in its first day of release – an unprecedented feat that puts Swift within striking distance of the all-time first-week sales record (Adele’s 25 at 3.4 million). In fact, based on one-day sales alone, Showgirl is already the year’s best-selling album. Fans frantically bought up dozens of collectible editions, helping Swift also shatter the vinyl sales record with over 1.2 million LPs sold in a single week.
At the same time, Swift is ruling the box office. Her concert film experience Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl – a limited three-day event in AMC theaters – waltzed to No. 1 worldwide, grossing $46 million globally (including $33 million in the U.S.) over the weekend. Billed as a “non-movie” backstage pass, the film gave Swifties a candid, behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Life of a Showgirl and proved the singer can draw crowds to cinemas as easily as to stadiums.
Industry figures are in awe of Swift’s multi-platform domination. “Her vision to add a cinematic element to her incredible album debut was nothing less than a triumph,” praised AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron, who called the film “a wonderful gift” to her passionate fans. With the album’s official first-week tally due soon, Showgirl is a lock for No. 1 – which will mark Swift’s 15th chart-topping album, breaking the record for the most among solo artists. From the record bins to the box office, Taylor Swift’s era of unprecedented success rolls on, and she’s inviting everyone to share in the show.
