The performance that changed halftime forever is getting the feature treatment. Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is headed to Hulu and ESPN in February 2027, with Disney+ carrying it in Australia.
Directed by Bao Nguyen, the film revisits Jackson’s 1993 halftime show at the Rose Bowl and follows him as he prepares for the moment. It promises never-before-seen footage and takes viewers behind the scenes of the production. The performance featured “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” “Black or White,” “We Are the World” and “Heal the World.”
Skydance Sports producers Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach and Lauren Gaffney are on board, alongside John Branca of Optimum Productions and Amit Dey of Into the Deep End Films. Executive producers include Karen Langford of Optimum and Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow and Jessica Boddy of NFL Films.
The cultural stakes are huge. Before Jackson took the field, halftime shows leaned on marching bands and the occasional appearance by Disney characters. His set helped turn the slot into the biggest stage in pop, setting off the race among superstars to headline it that continues every February.
For anyone who has only seen the clips, this is a chance to see the full picture of how the moment came together, and why it still defines the standard for halftime.
