John Mayer is taking ownership of his next chapter. The singer-guitarist has launched his own label, Sob Rock Records, in partnership with Universal’s Mercury Records, and released “Tom And Jerry,” his first new solo music in five years.

The partnership was announced Thursday, October 22, and the single hit streaming at midnight ET on Friday. Mayer produced it with Blake Slatkin, and Serban Ghenea mixed it. It was recorded at Chaplin Studios in Hollywood, the former Jim Henson Company lot that Mayer and McG purchased in January.

The label name nods to his 2021 album Sob Rock, his last project with Columbia Records, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Mayer left Columbia in 2022 after 21 years and eight studio albums. Financial terms and structure were not disclosed.

Mayer said the Mercury team has already proven to be a great partnership and that the path from creative vision to execution has never been easier. Mercury chairman and CEO Tyler Arnold called him one of the greatest artists of all time and said the label was proud to welcome him.

No album has been announced, but the return comes ahead of Mayer’s first Sphere residency in Las Vegas under his own name. The run was extended from six dates to 21 shows between April 8 and June 12, 2027, and each night features a solo set, a full-band set and a John Mayer Trio set.
