Pop superstar Halsey is adding a new title to her resume: film producer. The singer has signed on as an executive producer of acclaimed filmmaker Charlie Kaufman’s latest project – a 27-minute short film intriguingly titled, How to Shoot a Ghost. The offbeat movie, which just debuted its first trailer, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival and boasts a screenplay by poet Eva H.D.. It stars Jessie Buckley and Josef Akiki as two outsiders navigating a surreal afterlife version of Athens, Greece.
Halsey’s involvement comes via her newly launched production company, Unmade, which she co-founded with her manager Anthony Li and her fiancé, actor Avan Jogia. The venture is taking on How to Shoot a Ghost alongside Kaufman’s team, marking Halsey’s first foray into the film world. For Kaufman – the Oscar-winning mind behind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – the short represents another foray into experimental storytelling. In fact, How to Shoot a Ghost even features a moody cover of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” by Rufus and Martha Wainwright to set its eerie tone.
While Halsey hasn’t spoken at length about the project publicly, the collaboration is already turning heads in both music and film circles. Industry buzz around the short is strong; distributor Magnolia Pictures praised Kaufman’s vision, calling the film “a genre-bending spectacle that defies expectations at every turn.” For Halsey, who’s simultaneously gearing up for her Back to Badlands tour and celebrating the anniversary of her debut album, stepping into the movie business with Kaufman could signal the start of an exciting new creative chapter.
