A new horror film is putting a dark twist on the Bible, and it’s bringing together an unlikely duo: avant-pop artist FKA twigs and Hollywood maverick Nicolas Cage. The first teaser for The Carpenter’s Son has arrived, offering a glimpse of twigs as Mary (yes, the mother of Jesus) and Cage as Joseph in a genre-blending “biblical horror” tale. Directed by Lotfy Nathan, the film re-imagines the childhood of Jesus Christ as a supernatural thriller – complete with family secrets, eerie miracles, and malevolent forces stalking them.
In the teaser, twigs’s Mary is shown kneeling in the desert, crying out in despair, while Cage’s Joseph confronts a zombie-like figure as the sun sets. The atmosphere is anything but reverent; The Carpenter’s Son looks to channel dread more akin to The Exorcist or Mother! than a Sunday school story. According to the official synopsis, the plot follows Jesus (played by Noah Jupe) as a young boy in Roman Egypt who begins to discover uncanny powers and rebels against his guardian “Carpenter” – with dire consequences.
The bold premise has already sparked buzz and a bit of controversy. Magnolia Pictures, which will release the film in the U.S., is hyping Nathan’s creation as “a genre-bending spectacle that defies expectations at every turn.” For FKA twigs, known for pushing artistic boundaries in music, the role marks another step into acting (she’ll also appear in an upcoming The Crow remake). And for Cage – no stranger to eccentric roles – playing a biblical patriarch in a horror movie might just be the most Nicolas Cage move yet. Horror and art-house fans alike will find out when The Carpenter’s Son rises in theaters later this fall.
