When restaurateur Eddy Buckingham decided to open a retro-tavern inspired space next to his existing bar, it wasn’t easy. Soso’s is just steps from a number of other well-established restaurants and hidden next to the team’s popular South Soho Bar, but it seems to work. The space doesn’t take itself too seriously with liberal use of primary colors to bring a sense of whimsy to the dining experience and with an approachable yet elevated Continental menu that’s available late into the night.
GO HERE: Soso’s is a place that’s equal parts lively and intimate in Lower Manhattan. Soso’s is perfect for a casual dinner out with friends or even a private celebration. The atmosphere is laid back but design-forward with a private party room ideal for events like birthdays or intimate celebrations. Plus, if you’re not ready to end the night after dinner, South Soho Bar offers a seamless transition for your night out.
ORDER THE: The shareable plates and at least one entree, with the expectation to share are top of list. The head chef Luka Coyne moved from Sydney, Australia to help launch Soso and has crafted an approachable menu with a focus on fresh seafood and European-inspired small plates. Start with the decadent Crab Royale or Escargot, both rich and flavorful starters that’s are sure to set the tone. For the vegetarian diner, the leeks and wild mushroom skewers are both notable alternatives. For the rest of your mean, try a mix of something heartier and healthier. Get the Quartered Burger, an elevated take on the classic, or the Duck À L’orange. For the “healthier” entree option, the Sugarloaf Cabbage is a must-try. If you’re not drinking, consider rounding off your meal with the popular Guinness Sundae or a more simple Berries & Cream for dessert. For dessert sips, the Chocolate Orange Martini offers a sweet, indulgent finish.
THE VIBE IS: Soso’s is playful but elevated. The restaurant strikes a good balance by offering a space that feels relaxed but intentional. With its playful use of primary colors and cozy, intimate seating like the “hot-tub booths” the 65-seat dining room feels refined. It’s an ideal spot for everything from a birthday celebration with a small yet sizable group of friends to a low-pressure dinner where you can enjoy great food and drinks without worrying about having to google ingredients and dish names.
