Jay-Z Reunites With The Roots to Headline Roots Picnic 2026

Jay-Z is officially coming out of live-performance semi-retirement – and he’s doing it backed by one of the tightest bands in hip-hop. The Brooklyn rap mogul has been unveiled as a headliner for the 2026 Roots Picnic, where he’ll perform a full set with The Roots as his band. The historic collaboration will close out the festival’s first night on May 30 in Philadelphia, marking the first time Jay-Z has taken the stage with The Roots since their famed MTV Unplugged performance back in 2001. For hip-hop fans, this is a full-circle moment that few saw coming.

The Roots Picnic, founded by Questlove and his crew in 2007, has grown into a major annual event known for unique live mash-ups. Still, landing Jay-Z is on another level. The announcement also came with a bit of nostalgia: promotional materials list the 56-year-old rapper under the stylized moniker “JAŸ-Z,” complete with the hyphen and umlaut from his early career. It’s a nod to the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt, Jay’s 1996 debut. But throwback name styling aside, all eyes are on the performance itself. Hometown heroes The Roots will serve as Jay’s backing band, presumably adding their live instrumentation magic to his deep catalog of hits.

This year’s Roots Picnic is also moving to a new location, Philadelphia’s scenic Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park, to accommodate the expected huge turnout. “Moving the Roots Picnic to Belmont Plateau and bringing JAY-Z and The Roots together to perform are both bucket-list moments for us,” says Shawn Gee, The Roots’ manager and president of Live Nation Urban, in a press release. Organizers are billing it as one of the most significant editions of the festival yet. Tickets for the two-day event (May 30–31, 2026) go on sale March 18. For Jay-Z, who hasn’t headlined a festival in years, it’s a monumental return to the stage — and for the Roots Picnic, it’s a legendary meeting of hip-hop heavyweights that will go down in Philly history.
