Former Little Mix member Jade Thirlwall – now recording simply as JADE – is making a splash with her new solo single “Plastic Box.” The song is a slick synth-pop confection that doubles as a tongue-in-cheek take on jealousy and insecurity. Co-written by JADE with producer GRADES and singer-songwriter Lauren Aquilina, “Plastic Box” pairs an airy ’80s-inspired groove with lyrics examining those irrational pangs of envy that can creep up in a relationship. As JADE explains in a statement, “‘Plastic Box’ is about that irrational and toxic insecurity within us when we think about our partner’s previous relationships, even though we know everyone has a past. It’s a happy-sad pop song, and one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written.”
“Plastic Box” is the fourth preview of JADE’s upcoming debut album, That’s Showbiz Baby!, due out in September. It follows the dance-pop bangers “MMM (Love You Hard)” and “Hot (In It),” which have helped reintroduce Jade as a solo star with her own artistic flair. In the track’s playful music video – which nods to Madonna’s classic “Don’t Tell Me” visuals – JADE literally packs away her insecurities and strides forward confidently. Between its candy-coated synth hooks and JADE’s candid storytelling, “Plastic Box” further cements her emergence from girl-group sensation to a pop solo force stepping into her own spotlight.
