Psychedelic rock act Tame Impala (the project of Kevin Parker) released its long-awaited fifth studio album, Deadbeat, this past Friday. The 12-track record is Tame Impala’s first album in five years, following 2020’s The Slow Rush. On Deadbeat, Parker blends his trademark trippy, introspective style with a newfound electronic dance influence — an evolution he partly credits to becoming a father and immersing himself in Australia’s rave scene. Early singles like “End of Summer,” “Loser” and “Dracula” hinted at the album’s club-friendly pulse.
Parker has described the creative process as a personal journey, even embracing imperfections in his music. Writing candid, self-critical lyrics felt “really good… almost a celebration of being a deadbeat,” he said in a recent interview. Fans and critics are praising Deadbeat’s mix of hypnotic grooves and emotional honesty. With its bold sonic shifts and Parker’s signature psychedelic pop flair, Deadbeat solidifies Tame Impala’s place on the cutting edge of modern rock.
