Conan Gray gave his fanbase an early gift this week, officially releasing “The Best,” a song many in the crowd had been singing back to him every night on his sold-out Wishbone World Tour before a studio version even existed. The track dropped March 27 via Republic Records and arrives as the lead single off Wishbone Deluxe, an expanded edition of his fourth album due April 24.
Written entirely by Gray and co-produced with GRAMMY-winning collaborator Dan Nigro, “The Best” is a soft-rock-tinged meditation on the aftermath of heartbreak, specifically the messy longing that lingers even when you know a relationship is over. “I know it’s so low to hate you for leaving without me,” he sings, “but why leave so quickly?”
Gray debuted the track on opening night of the tour in Minneapolis back in February, and it quickly went viral. On Instagram, he explained the deluxe project, writing that the new songs are “not songs that didn’t make the album, they’re all new songs written after Wishbone, feelings I could only reach in the aftermath of the album’s release.” The world tour continues through Europe this spring before heading to Australia and New Zealand in the fall.
