‘One of Them Days’ Sequel in the Works, Reuniting Keke Palmer and SZA

Get ready for another wild day on the streets of L.A. – a sequel to the hit buddy comedy One of Them Days is officially in development. TriStar Pictures has confirmed early work on a follow-up film that will reunite stars Keke Palmer and SZA, whose comedic chemistry powered the original. The first One of Them Days, released in January 2025, became a breakout success, delighting critics and audiences with its mix of outrageous humor and heart. Now, less than three months after its debut, the studio is fast-tracking a sequel to continue the adventure.

The inaugural film – which marked Grammy-winning singer SZA’s acting debut – followed two struggling best friends, Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), as they scrambled across Los Angeles on a single chaotic day trying to scrounge up rent money. Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, the R-rated romp drew praise for capturing the vibe of LA’s South Central community with authenticity and wit. Producer Issa Rae (of Insecure fame) helped bring the project to life, and she lauded the “magical” on-screen bond between Palmer and SZA – a partnership she hoped would become “lifelong” after filming. That genuine rapport, coupled with hilarious set pieces (even The Washington Post called the film “a hope” for modern Black comedy), turned One of Them Days into a word-of-mouth winner. It grossed over $50 million globally on a modest budget, proving that fresh stories and new talent can still pack theaters.

With those kind of numbers and sky-high audience scores (the film boasts a stellar 96% on Rotten Tomatoes), TriStar’s decision to greenlight a sequel was almost inevitable. Both Keke Palmer and SZA are expected to reprise their roles as the ride-or-die duo of Dreux and Alyssa. Insiders say the original creative team is also likely to return – welcome news for fans who fell in love with the movie’s sharp writing and energetic direction. Plot details for the sequel are still under wraps, and it’s unclear what misadventures our heroines will tackle next. Will Dreux and Alyssa face an even crazier crisis on their next “day” together? Will new eccentric characters enter their orbit? One thing’s for sure: the follow-up will aim to recapture the chaotic fun that made the first film a surprise hit.

TriStar has not announced a release date yet, as the project is in early stages. However, reports suggest the studio is fast-tracking development to capitalize on the film’s momentum. The announcement alone has fans buzzing on social media – many eager to see SZA continue to flex her acting chops alongside Palmer’s proven comedic talent. The duo’s winning formula of chaos, comedy, and sisterhood struck a chord, and the prospect of more has people quoting their favorite lines already.

As Hollywood continues its love affair with franchise-building, One of Them Days looks poised to become an original new series anchored by two powerhouse Black women. If the sequel can build on the charm and chemistry of the first, audiences are in for another rollicking ride. Grab some popcorn (and maybe start saving rent money) – Keke Palmer and SZA are gearing up for “another one of them days,” and we can’t wait to see what trouble they stir up next.
