K-Pop Demon Hunters and Wicked Strikes Gold

The Golden Globes are living up to their name this year – with an extra dash of “Golden.” Netflix’s animated musical KPop Demon Hunters scored three nominations for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards (set for Jan. 11), becoming a triple nominee in major categories. The film, which follows a K-pop girl group moonlighting as demon slayers, earned nods for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (for its climactic anthem “Golden”). It even snagged a spot in the Globes’ new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, thanks to its blockbuster success.

“It’s insane… it keeps getting crazier and crazier,” marveled songwriter Kim Eun-jae (EJAE) about the honor. The hit track she co-wrote – performed in the film by fictional girl group Huntrix – will now face tough competition in the Best Original Song race. It’s up against Miley Cyrus’s “Dream As One” (from Avatar: Fire and Ash), Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson’s “I Lied to You” (Sinners), Nick Cave’s “Train Dreams,” and two new tunes from the Wicked: For Good musical film (Stephen Schwartz’s “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble”).

Overall, music and musicals are center stage at this year’s Globes. The lavish Wicked adaptation not only landed those song nods but also acting nominations for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, while Kate Hudson picked up a Best Actress nod for the music dramedy Song Sung Blue. Even the Best Original Score category is packed with big names like Hans Zimmer (F1) and Alexandre Desplat (Frankenstein). It all sets the scene for an awards night full of melody – and perhaps a K-pop fantasy adventure could emerge among the year’s golden winners.
