Olivia Dean Shines Amid Brit Awards Chaos

A first-ever Manchester ceremony could barely contain itself. In a historic departure from its London roots, this year’s Brit Awards at Co-op Live unfolded amid a riot of energy — and an unexpected number of live-TV bleeps. Presenters and performers pushed boundaries: host Jack Whitehall’s jokes about politicians were cut, and even an off-script “Free Palestine” chant was muted. The drummer of rock band Geese was cut off for swearing on stage, underscoring that this was no ordinary awards night.

But the big headlines belonged to British pop’s newest star. Soulful singer Olivia Dean swept four major awards, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year (for The Art of Loving), Song of the Year (for “Rein Me In,” shared with co-writer Sam Fender) and Pop Act. Emotional on stage, she told the crowd, “Making this album has changed my life… this album is just about love and loving each other in a world that feels loveless right now.” After accepting Song of the Year, Dean thanked Fender for writing “a beautiful song,” adding that it had “been a pleasure” to be part of it.

Other moments kept the mood both festive and pointed. Wolf Alice – named Group of the Year – used their acceptance to plead for support of Britain’s struggling grassroots venues. International star Rosalía (Best International Act) called her win “insane” and expressed pride in sharing her Spanish-language music globally. Newcomer Lola Young (Breakthrough Artist) urged fans to see music as “a safe haven” in troubling times. The ceremony may have been on mute at times, but Dean’s heartfelt message of love proved the undimmed highlight.
