Mariah Carey’s holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” just sleighed its way into the record books. The 1994 song has now notched 20 total weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart – more than any other song in history. As the festive standard returns to the top spot each December, Carey is once again proving why fans call her the “Queen of Christmas.”
Carey celebrated the milestone on Monday by posting a triumphant Instagram message, writing: “Humbly taking back the torch!! 20 weeks at #1… I’m so grateful ❤️.” This achievement also means Carey is reclaiming a chart crown she first earned in the ’90s – her 1995 ballad “One Sweet Day” (with Boyz II Men) set a 16-week No. 1 record that stood for decades, until Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” pushed the bar to 19 weeks in 2019. Now, her merry modern classic has surpassed them all.
Originally released over 25 years ago, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” didn’t reach No. 1 until 2019 – thanks in part to the streaming era reviving its popularity each holiday season. It has since become an annual chart-topper, and this year’s return to No. 1 brings the tune into uncharted territory. And with Christmas Day still approaching, Carey’s record-breaking reign may not be done yet – solidifying that her seasonal domination isn’t ending anytime soon.
