DAVE CHAPPELLE BLOCK PARTY
writer: Nicole Symmonds

Hurricane Ivan wasn’t enough to keep diehard hip-hop fans inside on Saturday September 18. Kanye West, best known for being a diva, took it like a man as he marched in the rain with the Central State University marching band. This served to strengthen his performance of “Jesus Walks,” which was reminiscent of the video. In keeping with the theme of humility, West graciously touted his protégé, John Legend, by allowing him to give the audience a preview of “Used to Love Her” from his debut album Get Lifted. In the midst of the NYPD, Dead Prez was not afraid to be Revolutionary But Gangsta. M1 and Stic delivered an intense performance that left the audience intently listening to their lyrics. The crowd started to warm up when they performed  favorites like “Hip Hop” and a RBG track entitled “Turn Off The Radio.”

The calm after the storm came in the shape of two soul songbirds. Enter Erykah Badu, sporting gold fronts, a huge Afro wig and perfect confidence. As she sung a perfectly ad-libbed version of “Back in The Days,” hands left the insides of rain-soaked ponchos to pump in the air. When the wind threatened to blow her wig off, she pulled it off defiantly. She went back to the “Other Side of the Game,” helping the audience to relive her relationship with Andre 3000. She then catapulted to “Love of My Life” by performing with her ex-fiancé Common.
