LINDSAY
LOHAN
by Lamont Hilliard
Controversy
sells, and the fact that LohanÕs well-publicized issues with her
father, only help to move records. Say what you want about her
lack of musical talent (and volumes will someday be written about
the topic). Even though it is clear from listening to her discs
that LohanÕs songs are the product of a skilled set of engineers,
the singerÕs fans Š tweens and teens who relate to her music in
a way that critics cannot Š do not care that the songs are not
truly an unaided representation of LohanÕs singing voice. The
girls who buy her discs want to be Lindsay Lohan and there are
enough of them to move ridiculous numbers of discs. Like it or
not, Lohan is clearly the voice of the Pro Tools generation.
ItÕs pretty easy to bash Lohan for being a stereotypical Generation
Y B-lister who would barely be considered a D-list celebrity in
past decades Š the actress/singer succeeds because she understands
her audience and connects with them in a way that only a contemporary
can. Love or hate her, as long as she maintains her party-girl
image, the cheers she hears from her fans will definitely drown
out the jeers she gets from her detractors.
