DESTINY'S
CHILD
written by Chauncy Jackson
It
has been a relationship marked by turmoil. The women of Destiny’s
Child, who grew up in Texas and scored their first top-10 hit
with “No, No, No” were approaching the first mountaintop on the
journey that was their career when the rumor began: Destiny’s
Child was breaking up.
Beyoncé Knowles explained at the time that that two of the members
of the group wanted to fire Beyoncé’s father Matthew Knowles,
who was the group’s manager. Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland received
a letter indicating that the other two members also wanted Matthew
Knowles to return the money he had made while acting as the group’s
manager. “We were just nominated for Grammys,” Beyoncé Knowles
said. “We had just went double platinum. So we were at the peak
position of our career at the time. At least we thought we were.
So I guess the ladies felt like, since we were at the peak, they
could ask for anything and get anything. So Kelly and I basically
told them we wished them the best, we love ‘em. God Bless you.
And we found two new ladies and within a week we were shooting
the ‘Say My Name’ video, and the next week they were learning
all the routines.”
